Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve – Kid’s Perspective

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Today, (July 29, 2014) I went to Great Sand Dune National Park. First we got the Great Sand Dune National Park Junior Ranger Program and then we went to the sand dunes. We decided to hike to the top. It was kind of hard but fun.

If you decide to go you need to know that the first 2 hills are the hardest but then it is super easy! Well my sister and I thought it was easy, but my mom and dad thought it was hard. We literally ran to to the top. The name of the peak was High Dune. When we went down we had lots of fun. What we did was pretend to roller skate down the hill. When we were at the bottom there was a small hill that are mom and dad let us run down while they took pictures at the bottom.

Once we finished we went to the visitor center again. We watched the movie about how the sand dunes are here today. The sand dunes are here because of the water, the sand, a mountain shaped like a horse shoe, and wind. After that we sat down to finish are Junior Ranger program. When we finished the program we met a really nice Ranger Sarah Oden that signed us off our book. Then we went to a Ranger Program. It talked more detailed about how the sand dunes were made. After that we were looking around the visitor center when we saw a squirrel outside. We thought it was a squirrel but it ended up being a 13 lined ground squirrel.

It looked super cool. I think my favorite part was going up and down the sand dunes. I really liked that park. That is the end of my trip to Great Sand Dunes.
