The Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail does not have its own Junior Ranger program, but is included in the Hawai’i Island National Parks Junior Ranger Adventure Book. Segments of the old trail can be easily accessed at Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park and the Pu`ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site.

My family walked on a segment of the trail at the Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Historical Park, Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park and the Pu`ukoholā Heiau National Historic Site.

The Junior Ranger section in the Hawai’i Island National Parks Junior Ranger Adventure Book was quite simple. There was one page to complete with two activities. In the first activity the Junior Ranger describes what they think would make a trip on the trail difficult. In the second activity, the Junior Ranger matches petroglyphs to a possible meaning.

Upon completion of the activity page, the Junior Ranger needs to take the Adventure Book to any visitor center for review to receive the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail Junior Ranger Badge.

During our visit, all of the visitor centers had depleted their supply of badges. Fortunately, I contacted a Park Ranger via e-mail from the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail and was informed that they would keep my address on file and when they received a new supply badges, they would send one to my daughter. When she receives the badge, I will post a picture of it.
